DRC's Privacy Policy

DRC respects the privacy of its members.  DRC will not sell, lend, or otherwise distribute its members' contact information to any other organizations.  DRC provides all conference attendees with other attendees' contact information for personal use only.  DRC members should not use this information for mass-mailing solicitations. Attendees who do not wish their information to be shared can let DRC know by checking the appropriate box on the registration form, or by directly notifying DRC.

DRC reserves the right to engage in direct mail member solicitation for fundraising and special projects.  However, any DRC member wishing to be removed from such a mailing list shall be promptly removed upon request, and shall retain full membership privileges if applicable.

A seal program to award trustmarks that meet stringent policy requirements enforcement criteria.  Licensed sites are required to post statements.  Web site contains how-to-join information, privacy statement wizard, extensive links and resources.

Online Privacy Alliance (www.privacyalliance.org)
A cross-industry coalition of more than 50 global companies and associations committed to promoting the privacy of individuals online. The Alliance is an ad hoc organization.  Its sole purpose is to work over the coming year to define privacy policy for the new electronic medium and to foster an online environment that respects consumer privacy.

PrivacyExchange (www.privacyexchange.org)
An online global resource for consumer privacy and data protection laws, practices, issues, trends and developments worldwide.  Created specifically to serve businesses, educators, and the media as a research tool, the PrivacyExchange contains a legal library, international policy and practice news, and an experts forum.

Direct Marketing Association, or DMA (www.the-dma.org)
Works with the business community to encourage responsible online marketing practices, and fight fraud, deception, and privacy abuse on the Internet.  A peer review process acts on complaints about DMA members and nonmembers.  The DMA also publishes numerous consumer pamphlets that assist in the process of buying directly by mail, telephone or computer.  The web site features a privacy statement generator.

Internet Alliance (www.internetalliance.org)
A leading trade association of the Internet industry.  The Internet Alliance works to build the confidence and trust necessary for the Internet to become the global mass market medium of the 21st century.  Since 1997, the IA's Privacy Toolkit, available on their site, has helped entrepreneurs and large corporations alike learn about and craft meaningful privacy policies.

Electronic Frontier Foundation, or EFF (www.eff.org)
A nonprofit organization working to protect civil liberties on the Internet and in all digital communication arenas.  Provides a free telephone hotline for questions regarding legal rights, and will answer your technical (e.g. "How do I connect to the Internet?") and legal (e.g. "Does my boss have the right to read my e-mail?") questions via telephone, snail mail, and e-mail.

Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) (www.epic.org)
A nonprofit organization established to focus public attention on emerging civil liberties issues and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and constitutional values.  On the Web site, you can subscribe to the EPIC Alert newsletter and get the history behind the government regulation debate.

Center for Democracy and Technology, or CDT (www.cdt.org/privacy) The CDT's Guide to Online Privacy lays out some key privacy basics, references, and information on existing protections and legislative initiatives.  An overview of the Department of Commerce "Elements of Effective Self Regulation for the Protection of Privacy" and accompanying online survey let you submit comments directly to the Department of Commerce and CDT.

CPA firms verify security systems of participating Web sites every 90 days and award icons of approval.

Better Business Bureau, or BBB (www.bbb.org)
The BBB system provides information to help consumers identify reliable companies, online and off-line, and offers assistance in resolving disputes with businesses. The BBB web site offers a directory of BBBs nationwide, consumer and business advisory publications, and an online complaint form for consumers.  BBBOnLine (www.bbbonline.org) is an authenticated and verified "seal" program that helps consumers find reliable companies that pledge to meet tough advertising and dispute settlement standards, including responsible advertising to children.
